Hazel is a team chat platform built for developer teams who want a Slack alternative they can audit, self-host, and extend. It pairs real-time messaging with integrations that bring pull requests, issues, and deploy status into the channels where people already talk.

It's a fit for engineering teams, startups, and open source communities that want a more professional space than Discord without Slack's pricing.

  • Developer integrations: GitHub (PRs, issues, deployments), Linear issue previews, Railway deployment notifications, and OpenStatus incident alerts.
  • Custom bots: connect your own services through webhooks, for example to post release notes or deploy notices.
  • Cross-platform sync: messages, threads, and reactions sync between Discord, Slack, and Hazel, so teams can move gradually.
  • Keyboard-first interface: a command palette jumps to any channel or person, with inline code highlighting and markdown support.
  • Search and threads: full-text search filters by keyword, user, and channel, and replies open threads without cluttering the main channel.
  • AI agents: built-in agents answer questions and automate tasks inside chat.
  • Apps everywhere: native desktop apps for macOS and Windows with automatic updates, a PWA that works offline, and a browser version.

Hazel is fully open source and can be self-hosted, which gives you control over where your data lives. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and authentication supports SSO through Clerk with fine-grained permissions.

The product is in public beta and free for everyone right now, with unlimited members, channels, and messages. Paid plans are planned for larger teams. Similar options in this space include Zulip and Rocket.Chat, and you can browse more in team chat and messaging.
