Decap CMS adds a browser-based editing interface on top of a static site that lives in Git. Developers define the content model, and editors write in a friendly UI without touching the repository directly. It suits teams running Hugo, Next.js, Gatsby, Jekyll or similar stacks. If you're weighing options, it sits alongside headless CMS tools, though it stores content as files rather than in a database.

  • Live preview: structured fields and rich text with a real-time view of the page.
  • Editorial workflow: drafts, review and publish statuses, so teams get quality checks without another tool.
  • Git-native history: content stays in your repo with full version history and branch workflows.
  • Flexible modeling: collections, nested structures, relation fields and slug rules.
  • Single YAML config: one file sets up collections, fields, workflow rules and media handling.
  • Extensible: custom widgets, editor components and plugins when the defaults fall short.

Decap is MIT-licensed, self-hosted and independently maintained in the European Union. Your content never sits in a vendor's database. You bring your own authentication and backend.

Decap Turbo is an optional extension for larger teams. It adds hosted authentication with roles, a database proxy for faster loading of collections, and a request proxy that avoids Git provider rate limits. It also offers an S3-compatible media library, deploy notifications, an activity log and encrypted site variables. Custom roles and priority support are paid add-ons.

The core CMS stays free.
