Apache Airflow is a workflow orchestration platform built for data engineers, ML teams, and infrastructure teams who need to define, schedule, and monitor complex pipelines in code. Workflows are written in pure Python, which means you get real programming constructs: loops, conditionals, dynamic task generation, and version control. No XML, no proprietary DSL.

The core concept is the DAG (Directed Acyclic Graph). Each pipeline is a DAG that defines tasks and their dependencies. Airflow's scheduler executes tasks in the right order, handles retries, and tracks state across runs. The web UI gives you a live view of every pipeline: task status, logs, run history, and dependency graphs.

Key capabilities:

  • Dynamic pipelines: Generate tasks programmatically at runtime, not just at definition time
  • Jinja templating: Parametrize tasks cleanly without boilerplate
  • Modular architecture: Workers scale horizontally via a message queue; you're not bottlenecked by a single process
  • Plug-and-play operators: Pre-built connectors for Google Cloud, AWS, Azure, and dozens of third-party services
  • Custom operators: Extend Airflow with your own logic when built-ins don't fit
  • Rich UI: Schedule, trigger, and inspect workflows without touching the CLI after setup

Airflow fits teams running data pipelines, ETL jobs, ML model training, and infrastructure automation. It's especially strong when pipelines are complex, interdependent, or need reliable retry and alerting behavior.

Compared to lighter tools like Dagu or Windmill, Airflow carries more operational weight but offers deeper scheduling control and a mature ecosystem. Managed options like Astronomer or Google Cloud Composer exist if you'd rather not run the infrastructure yourself. For teams building data or AI workflows with a visual-first approach, Prefect or Mage are worth comparing.

The Apache Software Foundation backs the project, and the community is large and active, with thousands of contributors and a well-maintained provider ecosystem.
