Zotero

Zotero is a reference manager built for researchers, students, and academics who need to wrangle sources without losing their minds. It runs on Mac, Windows, and Linux, and it's developed by a nonprofit with no financial stake in your data.

The core idea is simple: spot something worth saving, and Zotero grabs it. A browser extension detects articles, books, preprints, and news stories as you browse, then saves the full bibliographic record with one click. Sources from JSTOR, arXiv, library catalogs, and general web pages all work. No manual entry required.

Organizing is flexible rather than prescriptive:

• Collections let you sort items into project-specific folders
• Tags add keyword labels you can filter across your whole library
• Saved searches automatically populate with items that match your criteria as your library grows
• Annotations let you highlight and note directly on PDFs stored in Zotero

Citing is where Zotero earns its place in a writing workflow. It integrates directly with Word, LibreOffice, and Google Docs, inserting citations and building bibliographies as you write. Over 9,000 citation styles are supported, covering virtually every academic publisher and style guide. If you prefer a different text editor, it can generate formatted references you paste in yourself.

Sync is optional but useful. When enabled, your library, notes, and files stay current across devices, and you can reach everything through a web browser. Shared libraries are free and support unlimited collaborators, making it practical for co-authored papers or course reading lists.

Unlike bookmark managers focused on saving URLs, Zotero is purpose-built for academic sources: it captures metadata, manages PDFs, and produces properly formatted citations. Your data stays under your control, stored locally by default.
