RapidRAW is a lightweight desktop RAW editor built for photographers who find tools like Adobe Lightroom or Capture One too slow or too heavy. The entire application weighs just 20 MB, yet it delivers real-time editing feedback by offloading all image processing to the GPU.

The core is written in Rust and built on Tauri, with a custom GPU pipeline using WGPU and WGSL shaders. That architecture means even complex edits with multiple active masks stay fluid. It's not a browser-wrapped app or an Electron build padded with dependencies.

What you get out of the box:

  • Non-destructive editing: all adjustments write to a sidecar file, leaving original RAW files untouched
  • Professional tone controls: Tone Curves, HSL Color Mixer, Detail Enhancement, and Effects panels
  • AI masking: subject, sky, and foreground detection runs locally with no account or internet connection required
  • Batch operations: apply adjustments or presets across multiple images at once
  • Preset system: save and reapply looks instantly across your library
  • Image library: manage your full photo collection from a single interface

Generative AI tools handle object removal. You have three options: the built-in local model (fast, free, no setup), a self-hosted ComfyUI backend for users with capable GPUs who want custom models, or an optional cloud subscription for convenience. Each path produces the same quality results.

Compared to Darktable or RawTherapee, RapidRAW trades deep configurability for a cleaner, faster interface. It's aimed at photographers who want capable non-destructive editing without spending time on setup or fighting a cluttered UI. The project was started by a single developer as a personal challenge at 18, and it shows in the focus: nothing is bloated, every feature earns its place.
