Bulwark is a webmail client built specifically for Stalwart Mail Server. It runs in the browser and talks JMAP directly to your Stalwart instance, putting mail, calendar, contacts, and file storage into a single interface without touching a third-party server.

It's a good fit for anyone who already self-hosts Stalwart and wants a polished front-end that doesn't require a separate productivity suite. Unlike general-purpose clients such as Twake Mail, Bulwark is purpose-built around JMAP and Stalwart's data model.

Why JMAP matters here: JMAP keeps threading, search, and change tracking on the server. The inbox updates by push, and marking a batch of messages read is a single request. The client fetches only what changed, not a full sync.

Key capabilities across both editions:

  • Mail opens as threads with unified inbox across accounts, Sieve filters, S/MIME, and full-folder search
  • Calendar supports month, week, day, and agenda views, handles invitations from within the message, and shows shared availability
  • Contacts are stored and managed through Stalwart's address books
  • Files sit on the mail server with folder browsing, previews, sharing, and folder upload

Bulwark ships in two editions from the same codebase. The full edition runs as a Node.js container and adds OAuth and single sign-on, plugin support, settings sync across devices, web push notifications, and an admin console with a setup wizard. Office documents open for in-browser editing.

Bulwark Lite exports the same client as static files. It runs on any host that serves HTML, including Netlify, Cloudflare Pages, or a plain nginx server. Lite covers mail, calendar, contacts, and files, but skips OAuth, plugins, settings sync, and the admin console. Switching between editions is a redeploy; both build from the same commit.

The interface is translated into 27 languages. It's built in the EU, stores nothing of its own, and the code is public under AGPL-3.0.
