Bangle.io

A browser-based note-taking app that stores everything as plain Markdown files in a folder on your computer. There's no account, no sign-up, and no server holding your data. It suits people who want a Notion or Google Docs-style editor but still want to own their files.

The app runs offline once loaded. You can also install it as a Progressive Web App for a desktop-like experience. It works best in browsers that can access local files directly, such as Chrome or Edge.

Organizing notes

• Backlinks to connect related notes
• Folder view for people who prefer a file tree
• Tags and workspaces to group material
• Search and an action palette for quick navigation

Editing

• Clean WYSIWYG interface
• Markdown shortcuts for fast formatting
• Collapsible headings
• Todo lists, emojis, and date parsing

Split-screen and multi-tab views help when you're working across several notes at once.

Because notes are regular files, backups are up to you. Add the folder to your existing backup routine, or put it under git for version history. The app doesn't track or analyze you or your data. If you already have a folder of Markdown notes, you can open it directly. Anyone coming from Obsidian or Logseq will find the file-based approach familiar.

The project is free and open source, and it's still in beta. Its maintainers say they plan to keep the core product free, with possible optional add-on services to fund development.
