ZSvirt is a virtualization platform that brings the ZSphere engine from ZStack into the open source world. It targets teams that want to run production workloads on their own hardware, from a homelab to a large data center, without vendor lock-in. It sits in the virtualization management space and is a realistic option if you're looking to move off VMware.

A web dashboard shows VMs, hosts, CPU, memory, storage and alarms for each data center from one place.

  • Scale: manages 10,000+ hosts from a single control plane, with VMs up to 768 vCPUs.
  • Performance: SR-IOV networking, including SR-IOV live migration, with claimed throughput up to 60x over a Linux bridge.
  • VMware migration: agentless, hypervisor-level migration with full-disk block replication and incremental background sync. Cutover can take as little as 5 minutes.
  • Security: a built-in Native Key Provider, SecureBoot, vTPM 2.0, VM encryption, security groups for east-west isolation, MFA/2FA and immutable audit logs.
  • Automation: SDKs for Go, Python and Java, a native Terraform provider for IaC and GitOps, and 2,000+ asynchronous RESTful/OpenAPI endpoints.

The migration pipeline is the main draw for anyone leaving a proprietary hypervisor. Live data keeps syncing while the source VM runs, so downtime stays short.

ZSvirt shares its engine with the commercial ZSphere product, which is used by customers worldwide. Compared with a larger cloud stack like OpenStack, it focuses on virtualization itself and keeps the footprint light.
